Live updates as the new console hits store shelves today

As for our review impressions so far — our senior reviewer Sam Rutherford is hard at work putting our official full review together, but he’s been updating this liveblog with his evaluations today. He noted that, based on his lightmeter’s readings, the Switch 2’s display goes up to 450 nits with ambient brightness enabled, and tops out at 400 nits without. It’s comparatively dim for a device with HDR, but the numbers can get higher depending on the game.

Sam also hasn’t found the device to run too hot so far and that’s not just because of the new dock’s built-in fan. Here’s what he said about the dock:

“It’s sleeker and feels a bit more substantial than before. Plus it has a built-in fan now, which is nice.

But weirdly, the dock has one less USB port than before (just three instead of four like on the OG Switch).

That’s not a problem on its own, because the Switch 2 has one more USB-C port (two instead of just one).

Where things get awkward is that the dock only has one USB-C port, which is reserved for power. The other two ports are USB-A, which means that if you get the official Switch 2 camera, which only comes with a USB-C cable, you’ll need an adapter to plug it into the dock.

Alternatively, you could plug the camera directly into the Switch 2, because there will be one open USB-C port. But that means you’ll have to unplug the camera every time you undock the Switch 2.”
