A heroic elephant acted quickly to save the life of a drowning gazelle at La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City.

The gazelle was unable to escape a body of water in the middle of the enclosure. When its fellow zoo mate noticed, it jumped into action. The quick-thinking elephant extended its trunk into the water to create a place for the gazelle to climb out. Unfortunately, the first rescue attempt didn’t work.

But the determined elephant didn’t give up. Cheered on by a crowd, it eventually wrapped its trunk around the gazelle’s horn and pulled it to safety!

A zoo patron filmed the life-saving rescue, and the heroic elephant quickly became a viral sensation.

Believe it or not, this wasn’t the first time an elephant saved a life at this very zoo. Trompita, a 61-year-old Asian elephant, noticed an antelope stuck in that same body of water. She sounded an SOS from her trunk to get the attention of a nearby animal caretaker. Thanks to her bellowing sound, the brave caretaker saw the animal in danger and quickly jumped in the water to lift it to dry land. Heroism runs deep in this zoo family!
