How to clean fridge water dispenser, ice maker

The water from your refrigerator’s dispenser should taste fresh and look clear. If it’s looking murky, it’s overdue to be cleaned.

It’s a good idea to clean the dispenser every time you replace the water filter.

To clean your fridge dispenser:

  1. Lock the water dispenser or turn off the water line to prevent messy spills.
  2. If you can, push the fridge out of the way, turn off the water line and flush the hose. This is also a good time to vacuum the space your fridge is normally occupying.
  3. Combine equal parts water and distilled white vinegar in a bowl. Dampen a rag and wipe down the dispenser, spout and surrounding areas. Don’t forget to clean the inside elements in your fridge, too.
  4. Dip a scrub brush in the cleaning solution and clean inside the dispenser where the water and ice come out.
  5. Use a straw cleaner to clean inside the water nozzle.
  6. Wipe everything down with a clean rag to remove any residue so your beverages don’t taste like vinegar.
  7. Turn the waterline back on and flush out the dispenser for a final clean.

You can use dish soap to clean the dispenser, just make sure to rinse everything really well.

To clean your ice maker, dump the ice out into the sink and wipe down the ice bucket with the same water and vinegar mix.

Don’t forget to wipe down the elements inside the freezer before putting the ice maker back.

How to clean a smelly fridge

No one wants to open the fridge and be greeted with an unpleasant odor. When that happens, it’s time for a clean.

Start by getting rid of smelly leftovers and expired foods in your fridge.

Next, wipe down the inside of the fridge with warm water and soap. Don’t use chemical cleaners to avoid leaving any toxins or residue in your fridge. Use multiple clean rags as you clean the fridge so you’re not moving smelly bacteria from one place to another. Odor causing bacteria can live in the seals of your fridge, so don’t forget to give those a good cleaning, too.

Once the inside is clean, place a bowl of baking soda in the fridge to remove any lingering smells.

How to clean fridge shelves

Wipe up fresh spills and stains with a paper towel and some water. However, sometimes spills go unnoticed, and those require a little more work.

Fortunately, many fridge shelves and drawers can easily be slid out of the fridge, so cleaning is a breeze. Once the shelf is free from the fridge, clean it in the sink with warm water and dish soap. Dry it with a clean towel and put it back.
