After losing the Democratic primary, former NY Gov. Andrew Cuomo will stay on NYC mayor’s race ballot in November, competing against four others.

Zohran Mamdani beats Andrew Cuomo in NYC mayoral primary election
Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani defied political expectations and beat Andrew Cuomo in the New York City mayoral democratic primary.
Despite losing the Democratic primary for mayor of New York City, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will be on the ballot in the November general election as an independent, multiple sources told USA TODAY.
A person familiar with Cuomo’s decision said he would run as an independent, setting up a November throw-down for the liberal vote between the former governor, Democratic primary winner Zohran Mamdani and current Mayor Eric Adams, who is also running as an independent.
Another source with Cuomo’s campaign confirmed he would be staying in the race, but as CNN first reported, he is still determining whether he’ll actively campaign into November.
Mamdani, a Democratic Socialist and state Assembly Member, defied political expectations and beat Cuomo by a 7-point margin in the June 24 democratic primary.
The overwhelmingly Democratic city is expected to have five candidates on the ballot in November, including Mamdani, three independents ‒ Cuomo, Adams, former federal prosecutor Jim Walden ‒ and Republican Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels, a 46-year-old nonprofit that aims to prevent crime.
Cuomo will keep the place he already secured on the “Fight & Deliver” ballot line for the November election, CNN reported.
Cuomo is attempting a political comeback after resigning as governor in 2021 over multiple scandals, including covering up nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic and numerous allegations of sexual harassment, which he denies.
On June 25, Adams relaunched his campaign, making clear he will fight to keep his seat.
Like Cuomo, Adams’ political career has been mired in scandal. The U.S. Department of Justice dropped charges against him in April after he appeared to strike a deal with the Trump administration over immigration.
Candidates have until the end of June 27 to withdraw from running on a ballot line they qualified for if they lost another party primary, according to the New York State Board of Elections calendar.
